Salesforce Acquires Tableau Software for a Whopping $15.7 Billion!

Recently, Salesforce announced that it was acquiring leading analytics platform Tableau Software in an all-stock deal for $15.7 billion, to help enterprise customers accelerate digital transformation efforts with the ability to examine data across their entire business.

“We are bringing together the world’s #1 CRM with the #1 analytics platform. Tableau helps people see and understand data, and Salesforce helps people engage and understand customers,” Marc Benioff, chairman and co-CEO of Salesforce, said in a press release. “It’s truly the best of both worlds for our customers—bringing together two critical platforms that every customer needs to understand their world.”

The news comes less than a week after Google acquired Looker for $2.6 billion, in efforts to extend its business intelligence and analytics reach. It’s likely that every major tech company will continue to invest in analytics as organizations increasingly look to gain a competitive edge in the digital world.

Tableau will integrate with Salesforce Einstein to deliver an intelligent, intuitive analytics and data visualization platform for every department and user at a company, the release said. Tableau will also make Salesforce’s Customer 360 and analytics capabilities stronger, allowing the company to reach more customers, it noted.

More than 86,000 organizations globally use Tableau’s analytics platform, including Verizon, Schneider Electric, Southwest, and Netflix. Tableau will continue to operate independently under the same name following the acquisition, and will continue to be led by CEO Adam Selipsky and the current leadership team, the released noted.

The purchase will merge Salesforce’s community of 1.4 million and Tableau’s community of 1 million.

“Joining forces with Salesforce will enhance our ability to help people everywhere see and understand data,” Adam Selipsky, president and CEO of Tableau, said in the release. “As part of the world’s #1 CRM company, Tableau’s intuitive and powerful analytics will enable millions of more people to discover actionable insights across their entire organizations.”

The acquisition has been approved by both the Salesforce and Tableau boards of directors and the deal is expected to close during Salesforce’s third quarter, ending October 31, 2019.
